Environment impact
The cork boards of the Portuguese cooperative Sofalca are made from the virgin cork granules of the cork oak bark (Quercus suber). The stripping process takes place in cycles of 9 years, until the tree is about 150 years old. The cork oak is not affected by this. Due to the high CO2 storage capacity of cork oak forests, the extraction of cork insulation also contributes to climate protection. Cork oak forests are part of a unique and biodiverse ecosystem that is home to several endangered animal and plant species in Europe. Cork is 100% recyclable.
In the production of expanded cork, the 100% natural granules are ground and expanded. The process is very environmentally friendly. By heating with steam, the granules expand and bind with the naturally present resins, without any addition of adhesives. The energy for heating is largely obtained from biomass surpluses or from lower-quality cork residues.
The transport of the finished boards is done by ship, minimizing the energy impact here as well.
Expanded cork does not release any chemical substances into the indoor environment, making it a very healthy way of insulating.
